Prayers for those who mourn

Father of mercies and God of all comfort,
you have made nothing in vain
and you love all that you have made.
look in tender mercy on your bereaved servants,
and help them (us) by your grace
to find in you their (our) refuge and their strength. Amen.

Methodist Worship Book, 1999 (p458) adapted

O God, who brought us to birth,
and in whose arms we die,
in our grief and shock
contain and comfort us;
embrace us with your love,
give us hope in our confusion
and grace to let go into new life;
through Jesus Christ.

Common Worship: Pastoral Services (p238)

Blessed are you, God of compassion and mercy,
shepherd and protector of your grieving people,
their beginning and their ending.
Lead us to a place of peace and refreshment;
guide us to springs of life-giving water;
wipe away the tears from our eyes
and bring us to heaven
where there is no more death,
no more grief or crying or pain
in your presence, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Blessed be God for ever.

Common Worship: Pastoral Services (p247)

Eternal God,
we pray for ourselves as we pray for N.
We stand where earth and heaven meet,
where life is brought to death,
and death is made the gate to glory.
Deliver us from fear and doubt,
from despair and unbelief,
and bring us to the light of your presence.
Grant us that peace which the world cannot give,
so that we with N may trust in you
and find our life in you.
We make our prayer through Jesus Christ,
our Saviour in life and death,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever. Amen.

At the loss of a child

Lord God,
source and destiny of our lives,
in your loving providence
you gave us N.
to grow in wisdom, age, and grace.
Now you have called him/her to yourself.

We grieve over the loss of one so young
and struggle to understand your purpose.

Draw him/her to yourself
and give him/her full stature in Christ.
may he/she stand with all the angels and saints,
who know your love and praise your saving will.
We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
